Director of Library and Research Services – Phillips Lytle, LLP

Brief description of position:

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for the firm’s library operations and research services to support attorneys, paralegals, and other professionals.
  • Lead and manage a team of librarians and research professionals.

Provisional Law Library Assistant (3 positions) – NY Courts, 5th Judicial District

Location: 5th Judicial District (Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego Counties). There are currently three positions available, and they will be assigned to the Utica, Syracuse, and Oswego Law Libraries.

Job description: Law Library Assistants perform paraprofessional library duties either in support of professional library staff or as the highest level library staff member in a library that has at least one (1) specialized collection and serves ten (10) or more full-time (or the equivalent) judges, law clerks, and court attorneys. Law Library Assistants perform a variety of paraprofessional duties, such as operating library specialized computerized research and cataloging systems, organizing and maintaining the reference collection, applying library policy, reviewing and evaluating requests for information, and obtaining loaned resources by determining the location of each resource. Law Library Assistants may supervise law library and other clerical personnel and perform administrative and related duties.

Preferred qualifications: (1) library science degree and/or directly related experience as a law librarian; (2) demonstrated ability to plan, implement and/or coordinate projects (3) strong attention to detail (4) a professional, cooperative, positive and flexible attitude.

Salary Range: $29.75 – $32.83 per hour

Research Librarian – Nixon Peabody LLP

Job description: The Research Librarian is responsible for a wide variety of tasks that support the delivery of firm-wide library research and information services including conducting timely and cost-effective research, document retrieval, recommending appropriate research services and/or resources in response to inquiries from firm personnel.   • Provide high-level legal and business research to attorneys and staff in varying practice areas using both print and online resources.  
  • Perform litigation research. This includes finding cases and secondary materials related to specific fact patterns in a variety of jurisdictions.
  • Perform due diligence research on plaintiffs, experts, defendants and corporate entities.
  • Develop knowledge of research in multiple practice areas and jurisdictions. 
  • Collaborate with senior researchers with respect to larger and more complex assignments.
  • Assist the Competitive Intelligence Research team with providing business development research for attorneys and the Marketing department including preparation of company snapshots.
  • Gather, synthesize and summarize relevant, well targeted research findings to attorneys and staff to facilitate decision making and business planning.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with library staff in other geographies to provide seamless research service for attorneys in all firm locations.
  • Engage in innovation and library outreach. This includes the evaluation of new information resources and related technology and attending practice group meetings. 
  • Assist in the delivery of research training programs for attorneys and staff through a variety of formats. This includes in-person individual sessions, departmental meetings, web enabled training and orientation.  
  • Establish relationships with attorneys to improve, expand and market available information sources and services.
  • Participate in expanding and/or improving research and information services, procedures and practices.
  • Take part in special projects as requested by the Director, Library & Research Services.
  • Remain current in research techniques and available resources relevant to providing high quality research and information services. Continue professional development through various firm and association sponsored activities. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

East Asian Law Librarian – Columbia University in the City of New York

City & State: New York, NY

Brief job description: The Diamond Law Library at Columbia University has an opening for a Librarian for East Asian Law, who will support research and teaching of the faculty and students of Columbia Law School by developing the Law Library’s Japanese, Chinese, and Korean law collections, and providing reference services to students, faculty, visitors, fee-based service members, and the local, national, and international legal community.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the successful candidate will develop Columbia’s Japanese, Chinese and Korean law collections by selecting new materials for purchase and selecting new additions from gift materials.  The position will also serve as the initial contact for gifts of monographs, serials, and E-resources; and will identify which books to weed or transfer to offsite storage.  Responsibilities also include training law students and others through classroom teaching, workshops, and one-on-one instruction; providing in-depth research assistance for faculty members; creating and maintaining LibGuides; and other related duties.
