Office Supervisor II

Organization: Syracuse University Law Library

Job Description: The Law Library Office Supervisor II manages the Circulation Desk and coordinates workflow between departments in the Syracuse University College of Law Library. The Supervisor will hire, train and evaluate 20-25 Law Library Student Assistants and direct the work of one Library Technician. The Office Supervisor will schedule staff coverage of Law Library service points and provide direct student and faculty services to Law Library users, answering questions from students, faculty, and members of the University and Syracuse communities, including evening/weekends on rotation. The Office Supervisor will resolve patron account issues and will exercise independent judgment in meeting patron needs. The Office Supervisor will work collaboratively with the Collection Management supervisor to analyze workflows and propose and implement policy changes and process improvements that impact both Public Services & Technical Services. The Office Supervisor will establish priorities within the Public Services & Technical Services departments for processing gift collections, assign loose-leaf filing and other student tasks, and apportion clerical work between departments. The Office Supervisor will make selection decisions for the Law Library’s Casual Reading collection and maintain other specialty Law Library collections.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three (3) plus years of academic law library technical services or public services experience.
  • Supervisory experience in a public services or customer service environment.

Key Responsibilities
The Deputy Director of the Law Library plays a high-level role in administration of the Law Library, reporting to and working in close consultation and collaboration with the Edward Cornell Law Librarian, Associate Dean for Library Services, and Professor of the Practice (“Edward Cornell Law Librarian”). The Deputy Director contributes to the development and execution of strategic initiatives and operational plans to advance the priorities of all functional areas of the Law Library and may serve as the acting director during periods of the Edward Cornell Law Librarian’s absence.

The Deputy Director will oversee or initiate projects and plans to advance Law Library priorities, further to the direction of and in regular consultation with the Edward Cornell Law Librarian. The Deputy Director serves as a primary delegate of the Edward Cornell Librarian for operations and administration of the Law Library and, in this capacity, will serve as a key point of contact for specific projects and responsibilities. The Deputy Director will exercise well-developed project planning skills, collaborative work, and regular communication and documentation skills in fulfilling position functions.

The Deputy Director supervises other professionals, including other law librarians, and exercises advanced personnel management, career development, and coaching skills. Specific and continuing professional growth in skills related to professional personnel management and development is expected from the successful candidate and will be supported.
